Rotpunkt | Alex Megos and the Advent, the Agony and the Art of the Redpoint
This project combines two of my passions: rock climbing and the violin. From 47:55 through the end credits, you can hear the work I had the privilege of composing and recording for director Sanders Bohlke. As Megos made his ascent of the climb, I played arpeggios with an intentionally imperfect, raw sound, capturing the intensity of the moment. To create a fuller orchestral depth, we recorded up to 10 different violin tracks, layering them to support the single violin and build a rich, powerful soundscape. Each note accentuates Megos’ triumph, marking the culmination of his years of dedication and hard work.

To Draw A Horse | Stephen Stinson Documentary
One of the directors of this short film describes as it “cinematic therapy.” The violin in this documentary was more about layering textures and experimenting with more unconventional sounds to create eerie, unsettling tones. Sanders Bohlke, who directed the score, gave me the freedom to play with techniques such as tremolo and harmonics. The violin, in capable hands, can produce not only the familiar tones of classical music but also strange, almost otherworldly sounds. With intentional manipulation of dynamics and bowing techniques, the violin shifts from a lyrical, almost hymn-like melody to something haunting, capturing the full range of human emotion and imagination throughout the documentary. The violin truly imitates the creative process of the main protagonist.

Better | Matthew Mayfield
Recorded at Smoakstack in Nashville, TN, the violin and cello on this album are orchestral and tactfully interwoven around Matthew’s voice. With their ability to convey both subtlety and intensity, the strings elevate the tension and emotional stakes of the scene. Strings play a pivotal part in the buildup in this song, which creates such an emotional pull on the main actors during the end of the episode. We carefully crafted the atmosphere, with the string section building up tension to mirror the unresolved fates of the characters. The use of strings in this context is especially notable, as they have a unique ability to weave in and out of the arrangement, subtly guiding the emotional tone. This kind of musical storytelling can leave a lasting impact on the audience, especially when it is tied to televised pivotal moments.
